Dops & Accessories
The dop should be chosen based on the size and shape of the stone, so it helps to have a few different sizes and shapes on hand. A handful of small accessories make transfers and alignment far more reliable. Each item below comes in three levels.

Match the dop to the stone
Cone dops
The standard choice for conical or round stones. Metal holds up to the heat and pressure of cutting.
Flat dops
Better suited to tabular or square-cut stones, where a flat bonding surface gives a more stable hold during cutting.
Several sizes
Keep a range of sizes and shapes, so you are never caught without the right dop for an unusually large or small stone. Dop sizes are specific to each machine, so check the quill before you buy.
Dops, wax and transfer
The stone holders. Choose by the size and shape of the stone, and check that they fit your machine before you buy.

Wax bonds the stone to the dop, and a small, controllable flame softens it. A butane torch is faster, so keep it for transfers once you are comfortable.

Confirms a transfer is properly aligned. A laser beam is reflected off one of two opposite facets, and you adjust the handpiece until the beam returns at the same height, then repeat on the opposite facet. Our setup uses a laser and an adjustable mirror holder.
See and measure your work
Lets you inspect each facet up close, which is essential for checking polish and meet points before moving to the next grit. A triplet lens keeps the view sharp and free of color fringes.
- Beginner Gain Express 10x Hastings tripletAmazon
- Intermediate Toyo hexagonal 10x triplet, 21 mmAmazon
- Advanced Hastings 10x, optical-grade glassAmazon
